About Pediatric Dental Care

Why kids need a different kind of dentist

Children aren’t small adults. Their teeth are still forming, their jaws are still developing, and their first experiences at the dentist shape whether they’ll take care of their smile for the rest of their lifetimes.

Pediatric dentistry covers everything from a baby’s first oral check to teen orthodontic assessments, but the real work is emotional. A child who trusts the dentist becomes an adult who books their own cleanings. Arrow Dental provides pediatric care for children, focusing on prevention, detection, and treatment. Our gentle, child‑friendly approach makes visits positive and builds a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.

Unhurried, gentle approach

We let children explore the chair, the mirror, and the tools before anything happens.

Prevention first, always

Our goal is to keep kids in the “cleaning and sealants” lane, not the “fillings” one.

By age

Different ages, different needs

Every stage of childhood has its own dental questions. Find yours below.

0–3 yrs

First tooth to full set

By age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth, we check for decay, review feeding habits, and guide brushing.

  • Infant oral check
  • Bottle & pacifier guidance
  • Teething support

3–6 yrs

The trust years

With all 20 baby teeth in, children learn what a dental visit feels like. Gentle cleanings build trust for life.

  • Cleaning & fluoride
  • Cavity prevention
  • Thumb-sucking guidance

6–12 yrs

Mixed dentition

As baby teeth fall and adult teeth arrive, we add sealants, monitor crowding, and refer for early orthodontics.

  • Molar sealants
  • Space maintainers
  • Ortho screening (age 7)

6–12 yrs

The teenage years

Braces, cavity risks, and wisdom teeth appear. We treat teens as young adults and speak directly to them.

  • Braces & aligners
  • Sports mouthguards
  • Wisdom teeth planning

All pediatric services

Everything your child might need, in one place

Dental care services for children, from preventive cleanings to dental trauma emergencies. All adapted for young patients.

Preventive Dental Care

Keeping healthy teeth healthy.

Infant Oral Health

First dental visit by age 1. Gentle oral exam, feeding guidance, and coaching for parents on brushing tiny teeth and gums.

Comprehensive oral exams

Regular checkups to monitor oral development and catch issues early. Twice-yearly examinations track tooth eruption, bite, and jaw growth.

Cleaning & Fluoride Treatment

Twice-yearly cleanings paired with a fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel. The single most important preventive step for young mouths.

Dental sealants

A thin protective coating applied to the biting surface of new molars to block food and bacteria from settling in the deep grooves where cavities start.

Habit-breaking appliances

Small, gentle devices to help children stop thumb-sucking or prolonged pacifier use before the habit affects tooth and jaw development.

Early orthodontic assessment

First orthodontic screening around age 7. Catches crowding, bite issues, and jaw growth problems early when small interventions still work.

Sedation for anxious children

For children with severe anxiety, special needs, or complex treatment plans, we offer conscious sedation that is safe, gentle, and monitored.

Restorative Dental Care

When treatment is needed.

Tooth-coloured fillings

When cavities do happen, we use white composite fillings, minimal drilling, and shaped to match your child’s tooth exactly.

Dental crowns

Custom-made caps for severely decayed or damaged teeth restoring shape, strength, and function while saving the natural tooth underneath.

Root canal & pulpotomies

When decay reaches the pulp, we relieve pain and preserve the tooth with pulpotomies for baby teeth and full root canals for permanent teeth.

Baby tooth extraction

For stubborn baby teeth that won’t fall out or severely damaged teeth, we provide painless removals with numbing gels so most children barely notice.

Space maintainers

When a baby tooth is lost too early, we fit a small appliance to hold the gap open and protect the space for the permanent tooth waiting underneath.

Dental trauma care

Knocked-out tooth, chipped tooth, or a fall on the face. Same-day appointments for children at all four branches. Call or WhatsApp us the moment it happens.

Cosmetic Dental Care

Confidence work.

Early interceptive orthodontics

Small early interventions to guide teeth and jaw growth in the right direction. These often reducing or eliminating the need for full braces later.

Children's braces

Metal or clear brackets to correct crowding, gaps, and misaligned bites during the mixed-dentition years. Straightforward, affordable, effective.

Dental bonding & veneers

Conceals chips, cracks, or discolouration on visible front teeth with tooth-coloured composite bonding or ultra-thin veneers.

Teeth whitening for teens

Safe, controlled whitening for older teens once permanent teeth are fully in place. In-office option, always under supervision.

Implants and gum contouring

For older teens, we offer implants for missing teeth, gum contouring for gummy smiles, and full smile design for confidence.

The Arrow Dental approach

Built around how children actually feel

Every part of a child’s visit is designed with the small human, not the parent, in mind.

Every step is explained first, then shown on a toy or finger, and finally done gently. Parents searching for child‑friendly dental care in Nairobi and Thikawill find this method builds trust and reduces fear.

Parents Welcome in the Room

You are encouraged to stay with your child throughout the visit. No separation, no waiting outside. For families looking for stress‑free pediatric dentistry, your presence is the best comfort.

Positive, No‑Shame Coaching

Cavities and missed brushings happen. We guide children without scolding. Parents seeking supportive dental visits appreciate that safe, judgment‑free care keeps children coming back.

A first appointment is short, often just 15 minutes with a chair ride, mirror, and tooth count. For parents searching how to prepare kids for first dental visit, this gentle start builds trust before treatment.

Common questions

Children’s Dentistry FAQs

When should my child first see a dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months after their first tooth erupts. Even a single tooth can develop decay. The first visit is short, gentle, and is as much about you learning how to care for those tiny teeth as it is about checking the child.
Do baby teeth really need fillings?
Yes — often, unfortunately. Some baby teeth stay in the mouth until age 12, and untreated decay can spread, cause pain, affect eating and sleep, and damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. When a filling is recommended, it’s because leaving the cavity alone would cause bigger problems.
My child is terrified of the dentist. What can you do?
We start slow. The first visit for an anxious child is often just a “meet the chair” appointment — no examination, no tools, just familiarity. We use tell-show-do to explain every step. For children with severe anxiety or special needs, we offer conscious sedation at the Digital Centre. In our experience, most fearful children are calm by their third visit.
Do you use fluoride? I've read mixed things.
Yes, we use topical fluoride varnish at professional cleanings — this is different from swallowed fluoride. Topical fluoride varnish is applied to the tooth surface, hardens the enamel, and is rinsed off. It’s endorsed by the Kenya Dental Association, WHO, and every major pediatric dental body worldwide. Parents who prefer to skip it can always opt out; we simply focus more on brushing coaching.
How often should my child visit the dentist?
It is generally recommended for children to see dentist every six months for routine check-ups and cleanings.
How can I prepare my child for the first appointment?
Your child will likely have the same attitude as you. If you are positive, there are high chance your child will also have a positive attitude. We make our environment as comfortable as possible and have experience in helping children feel at ease.
Are X-rays safe for children?
Yes. Modern dental X-rays use extremely low radiation. We use lead aprons and thyroid shields for every child, and we only take X-rays when clinically necessary, not routinely.
What's the ideal age to start braces?
Every child should have an orthodontic screening around age 7, not to start braces, but to check whether early intervention would help. Most braces treatment happens between 11 and 14, once most permanent teeth are in. But some jaw growth problems are far easier to fix at 8 than at 14, which is why the age-7 check matters.
Can I stay with my child during the appointment?
Yes, always. You’re welcome in the treatment room for as long as your child wants you there. For very young children, you can even hold them on your lap in the chair. Some older children (especially teens) prefer to be alone with the dentist.
Does insurance cover for children's dental care?
Arrow Dental Centre accepts a comprehensive range of providers to make treatment affordable. We partner with leading insurers to offer cashless billing at all our branches. It is important to note that dental coverage varies widely depending on your specific scheme; while standard plans usually cover routine pediatric dental services like check-ups, cleanings, and simple fillings, more complex treatments such as braces or specialized sedation dentistry may require out-of-pocket payment or prior authorization.
My child chipped a tooth. Is that an emergency?
A knocked-out or badly chipped permanent tooth is a same-day emergency — call us immediately at 0740 187 579. If a tooth has come out completely, place it in milk (not water) and get to a branch within an hour. A small chip in a baby tooth is usually not an emergency but should be checked within a few days.
How can I prevent cavities in my child's teeth?
Maintain a routine of brushing and flossing daily, limit intake of sugary snacks and drinks, and ensure regular dental check-ups.
