About Tooth Extraction

What is a tooth removal?

Tooth extraction or tooth removal is the medical procedure of removing a tooth from the mouth. It is beneficial to people with teeth that cannot be saved with restorative dental procedures. For people whose teeth are severely affected by decay and nothing can be done to save them, dental extraction is recommended to prevent further oral complications. Having your tooth pulled is one of the last things anyone wants. However, sometimes it’s just unavoidable. At Arrow Dental Centre, we have a dentist who understands how to make you comfortable during the extraction procedure.

At Arrow Dental, extractions are performed under local anaesthetia so you feel no pain during the procedure. Simple extractions take 20–30 minutes; more complex surgical extractions may take a little longer. Whatever your situation, our team explains every step, keeps you comfortable throughout, and provides clear aftercare so you heal quickly.

Digital X-Ray Planning

We use precise digital imaging to plan every extraction, ensuring the safest and most efficient removal.

Who it’s for

When extraction is the right choice

We recommend extraction only when a tooth truly can’t be saved. Here are the most common situations.

Severe Decay or Damage

Teeth destroyed by severe decay, fractures, or trauma that can’t be restored with fillings, crowns, or root canals.

  • Full assessment done
  • Replacement options discussed
  • Same-day if needed

Orthodontic Preparation

Teeth may be removed to create necessary space for braces, especially in crowded mouths to ensure proper alignment.

  • Precise timing
  • Coordinated with orthodontist
  • Minimal recovery duration

Impacted Teeth

Wisdom teeth, retained baby teeth, or teeth causing infection or crowding removed to protect the rest of your smile.

  • Surgical extraction if needed
  • Sedation options available
  • See our wisdom teeth page

Why consider Teeth Removal

Why timely extraction protects your smile

Leaving a badly damaged tooth in place causes more harm than removing it. Here’s why extraction, when needed, is the right call.

Relieves pain immediately

A severely infected or fractured tooth causes constant discomfort, and removal provides fast relief so you can return to normal daily activities.

Prevents infection spreading

Removing a diseased tooth stops harmful bacteria from spreading to neighboring teeth, gums, and even affecting your overall systemic health.

Protects neighbouring teeth

Extracting a damaged tooth prevents cracks, pressure, or decay from spreading to the healthy teeth positioned right next to it.

Creates space for orthodontics

Extraction may be necessary before braces, ensuring crowded mouths have enough room for proper alignment and long‑term stability.

Quick, single‑visit procedure

Majority of simple extractions are completed in under thirty minutes, making it a fast, straightforward solution with less recovery time.

Clear path to replacement

Once the tooth is removed, options like implants, bridges, or dentures can restore your smile with strength, function, and natural appearance.

Your options

Types of tooth extraction

Not all extractions are the same, and we select the right technique based on the tooth’s condition, position, and your overall treatment needs.

  • Simple Extraction: Ideal for fully erupted teeth with visible crowns, this straightforward procedure uses local anaesthetia and gentle removal, with typical healing time of about five to seven days.
  • Surgical Extraction: Required for broken, impacted, or partially erupted teeth, this method involves a small incision and careful removal, with healing usually taking seven to ten days for full recovery.
  • Multiple Extractions: When two or more teeth must be removed in a single visit, often for orthodontic preparation or advanced gum disease, this approach ensures efficiency and coordinated treatment planning.
  • Immediate Denture Extraction: Teeth are extracted and dentures fitted on the same day, allowing you to leave the clinic with a complete smile and no gap in appearance or function.

Common questions

Tooth Extraction FAQs

When is a tooth extraction necessary?
We only recommend extraction when a tooth can’t be saved through other treatment. This is often the case for teeth with severe decay, advanced gum disease, or significant damage. Our priority is always to preserve your natural teeth where possible.
Will the extraction hurt?
No. The extraction procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during treatment. Some mild soreness afterwards is normal and easy to manage.
How long does a tooth extraction take?
A simple extraction usually takes about 30 minutes. Surgical extractions for impacted or broken teeth may take a little longer.
How much does a tooth extraction cost?
Simple extractions start from Ksh 3,000. The consultation covers the assessment and confirms the final cost.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Full healing of the socket takes one to two weeks.
What can I eat after an extraction?
Stick to soft, lukewarm foods like soup, yoghurt or mashed potatoes for the first day. Avoid hot drinks, straws, and rinsing vigorously for 24 hours.
Can I replace the extracted tooth?
Yes. At Arrow Dental, we offer implants, bridges, and dentures as teeth replacement options. We usually wait a few weeks for the area to heal before placing a permanent replacement.
What if I do not replace the extracted tooth?
After tooth removal, the load of chewing is affected which puts an increased load on the remaining teeth. This can increase the risk of tooth fracture and wear. Also, the teeth surrounding the gap may shift leading to a misaligned bite.
