Does SHA or insurance cover implants and dentures?

From the Tooth replacement in Kenya: implant, bridge or denture? guide

For civil servants using SHA, and for many private schemes, they may be partly covered. Implants and dentures fall under major procedures, so what you get depends on medical necessity and how much of your SHIF limit remains. Private schemes vary, and we check your cover before any treatment starts.

Will SHA or my insurance pay for this?

TreatmentStarting priceCover
DenturesKES 13,000May be partly covered
BridgeKES 25,000 per unitCheck with your scheme
ImplantKES 140,000May be partly covered

If your scheme offers only a set amount towards replacing a tooth, you can usually put it towards the option you prefer and pay the difference. Ask us to confirm this for your scheme, because the rules differ.

How do you find out what you would pay?

Bring your SHA details or insurance card to a consultation. We give you a written plan with costs, submit the pre-authorisation, and tell you what remains for you to pay before anything is done.

If you pay cash, we provide a receipt and a treatment summary for every visit. Most insurers accept these for reimbursement, but check your own policy first. Only your insurer can tell you what they will pay.

Implants and other major treatment can also be paid in instalments, starting with a deposit from KES 40,000 for implants.
