Dental check-up: what happens and what it costs

Part of General dentistry

A dental check-up is a look at your teeth, gums and mouth to catch problems while they are still small and cheap to fix. Most people need one every six months.

What actually happens, and will it hurt?

A routine check-up should not hurt. It usually goes like this:

  1. Your history. We ask about any pain, medication or concerns.
  2. Examination. We check your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth.
  3. X-rays, if there is a clinical reason. We take them when they are needed, not routinely.
  4. Discussion. We explain what we found, in plain language.
  5. A written plan. If anything needs treatment, you get the options and costs in writing before anything is done.

If your gums are sensitive, a cleaning can feel uncomfortable in places. Tell us and we will adjust.

What will this cost me?

A consultation at Arrow Dental starts from KES 1,500. The first visit is not free, but it covers a full examination and a written treatment plan with costs, so you know what you are paying for. A professional clean starts from KES 6,000. Check-ups are generally covered for civil servants under SHA.

How often should you go?

Every six months for a check-up and clean. Every three to four months if you have gum disease, smoke or are wearing braces.

Why go if nothing hurts?

Early decay and gum disease often cause no pain at all. By the time a tooth hurts, the treatment is usually bigger and more expensive. A small filling costs from KES 5,000. If decay reaches the nerve, a root canal starts from KES 12,000, before any crown. Regular visits are also how a dentist notices changes you cannot see yourself.
