Tooth disimpaction: what it is, why you may need it and what it costs

From the Wisdom teeth removal guide

Tooth disimpaction is the surgical removal of a tooth that has not come through normally and cannot be taken out with a simple extraction. It is most often a wisdom tooth. At Arrow Dental it starts from KES 15,000.

What actually happens, and will it hurt?

You should feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure, because the area is numbed with local anaesthetic.

  1. X-ray. This shows the tooth’s position and how close it is to nearby nerves. Some cases benefit from a 3D scan.
  2. Anaesthetic. The area is numbed.
  3. Access. A small opening is made in the gum. This is sometimes called open disimpaction.
  4. Removal. The tooth is lifted out, sometimes in sections, which is often easier on the surrounding bone.
  5. Closing. The gum is cleaned and usually stitched.

Soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards are normal. See how to recover well.

When is it needed?

Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. If it has come through straight and you can clean it properly, it can stay. Disimpaction is usually recommended when a tooth is impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed beyond repair or pushing other teeth out of line. An X-ray tells us which situation you are in.

How much does it cost?

Disimpaction starts from KES 15,000, compared with KES 4,000 for a simple extraction, because it needs surgical access and more time. Your dentist will confirm the price once they have seen your X-ray.
